Governed by You

Every time you open a feed, someone has already decided what you will see. The question is who, by what process, and whether you had any say in it.
That is not a technical question. It is a governance question. Visibility determines which ideas spread, which events get attention, which voices reach people and which are effectively silenced. Whoever controls visibility controls the information environment, and whoever controls the information environment shapes how people understand the world. That is political power, and it ought to be governed like political power.
Most conversations about managing online information fall into one of two camps. The first says the government should regulate it. The second says the market should handle it. Both are coherent. Both are also, on their own, demonstrably insufficient.
When Governments Hold the Lever
A democratic information system that serves the public interest depends on open dialogue conducted in good faith. Government oversight is supposed to protect that. In practice, governmental control over information has a consistent tendency to slide from oversight into narrative management, from protecting the public interest into serving the interests of those currently in power.
The problem is structural. When you concentrate the power to decide what people see into a single institution, even a democratically elected one, you create a chokepoint. Chokepoints get captured. Governments learn to control narratives and suppress dissent when it becomes inconvenient. They define "harmful content" in ways that protect incumbents. And the public's ability to respond is constrained by election cycles that move far too slowly to correct information policy in real time, if they can correct it at all.
When the Market Holds the Lever
The "free marketplace of ideas" was never as free as advertised. Visibility on the dominant platforms is allocated by proprietary, opaque algorithms owned by companies whose primary obligation is to their shareholders. The Musks and Zuccs of this world do not merely host public discourse. They shape it. When Musk bought Twitter, he acquired the mechanism by which a significant share of global political conversation is surfaced or suppressed, and promptly had engineers modify the algorithm to boost his own posts. Meta knew its algorithm rewarded outrage and prioritised engagement over user wellbeing. These people are not elected, not accountable to the public, and the track record speaks for itself.
On the demand side, the unregulated model produces exactly the information environment you would expect from a system with no quality filter and no cost for dishonesty. Noise proliferates. Fakes spread efficiently, often more efficiently than corrections, because fakes are designed to be compelling and corrections are usually boring. There is by now extensive evidence that this environment is gamed routinely by state actors running influence operations at scale, treating the absence of governance as a feature. The public benefit of a system where state-sponsored propaganda competes on equal footing with genuine journalism is unclear.
The marketplace of ideas turns out to reward the same things as any other unregulated market: power and resources, not quality.
The False Binary
This framing is a false choice. It persists because it maps onto existing political coalitions, not because it exhausts the design space. There is a third possibility that neither camp talks about much, probably because it does not serve either camp's interests: public governance of visibility without a central chokepoint.
Visibility is a scarce resource. There is far more content produced every day than any person can consume, and allocating scarce resources is a governance problem. The question is not whether visibility will be governed. It is always governed, whether by an algorithm, an editor, a government censor, or the raw physics of a chronological timeline. The question is whether the governance is legitimate: representative, transparent, and open to the people being governed.
What Veridonia proposes is a system where visibility decisions are made by the community itself, through a process with the basic procedural properties of democratic governance: defined question, defined voters, equal weight, clear outcome. Content reaches the feed because randomly selected community members, through majority vote, decided it should. The voting process works like jury duty. You do not choose which posts you review. You are drawn at random.
The critical difference from both the government model and the corporate model is the absence of a durable chokepoint. In a centralised system, you capture the regulator and you control the narrative. In a corporate system, you own the algorithm and you control the feed. In a system built on sortition, there is no fixed seat of power to capture. The people making decisions change continuously. Influence is earned through demonstrated alignment with community outcomes and lost the same way. There is no permanent moderator class and no editorial board with lifetime tenure. The people doing the governing can always be replaced, because replaceability is baked into the design.
This does not mean the system is ungovernable. It means governance is distributed and procedural rather than concentrated and discretionary. There are rules, rounds, and mechanisms for appeal. Decisions are logged and auditable. But the power to decide what people see does not accumulate in a place where it can be quietly seized.
Veridonia is a privately owned platform, and the owner retains the ability to intervene in cases that threaten the platform's existence, like child exploitation material or instructions for building weapons, and only after the community's own governance has demonstrably failed to remove the threat. That power exists, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. The commitment is to never use it to influence what the feed shows you, and any such intervention is logged and publicly available, just like every other decision in the system. We are exploring the possibility of going fully non-profit and open source in the future, but ultimately we will go with whatever structure best serves the mission.
